After 26 years in the Missouri House of Representatives, Marvin Proffer has decided it's time to do something else; he officially withdraws as a candidate for re-election from the 158th District.
Cape Girardeau City Council's plan to annex southward came under criticism last night from the Scott City Council during the first formal dialogue between the two bodies on the now court-bound matter; members of the Scott City Council and the superintendent of Scott City schools urged that Cape Girardeau realign its proposed boundaries so it won't take in land east of Interstate 55 opposite the Cape Girardeau Municipal Airport.
The J.E. Latta Construction Co. of St. Louis has submitted a low bid of $654,089 for the construction of a floodwall in Cape Girardeau; the Army Corps of Engineers will consider the bid for closing the gap in the flood-control system in Cape Girardeau.
The Ben Sides Construction Co. of Cape Girardeau, as low bidder, has been awarded the contract to build a two-room addition to the Nell Holcomb School; tentative plans for the addition were made when the school originally was built three years ago.
G.W. Schack, former police court judge, was renamed to that post by the Cape Girardeau City Council last night; in addition, three people were appointed to be in charge of the swimming pool at Fairground Park: Lowry Miller as life guard, Harry C. Rabe as manager of the men's dressing room and Mrs. L.J. Pott in charge of the women's dressing room.
Plans for launching a fund drive to erect a new church building are announced by the Church of the Nazarene; the congregation will build a new church at the southeast corner of Merriwether Street and Park Avenue.
T.J. Shorb cut the final string that bound him to Cape Girardeau city yesterday when he purchased a 40-acre farm north of town; Shorb plans to raise golden seal root on his farm on Juden Creek.
Contractor John Rouse completes the paving work on South Sprigg Street, and that road is now one of the finest in Cape Girardeau; the two blocks south of Good Hope Street open in the morning.
