The annual "Third Sunday in May" meeting is held at Old Apple Creek Presbyterian Church near Pocahontas; following the morning worship service, a basket dinner is held at noon; G.S. Lauser, public relations officer at Presbyterian Children's Home, conducts the service.

ALTO PASS, Ill. -- Roman Catholics in Union County mark the 100th anniversary of the Diocese of Belleville with an outdoor Mass at Bald Knob Mountain near Alto Pass.

50 years ago: May 17, 1962

L.J. Schultz was honored last night for his 37 years of service to education in Cape Girardeau, 27 of them as superintendent of schools; he was guest of honor at a dinner of the Community Teachers Association, but attendance was much broader, the gathering spilling over into the hallway and anterooms of Memorial Hall ballroom on the State College campus.

Handlers, breeders and dog fanciers from all parts of the nation are arriving in Cape Girardeau to participate in the ninth annual All-Breed Dog Show and Obedience Trial of the Southeast Missouri Kennel Club Inc., to be held tomorrow at the Arena Building.

75 years ago: May 17, 1937

Judge Frank Kelly, in a decision in Circuit Court, rejects the application of the Aquamsi Land Co. for an injunction to restrain the city of Cape Girardeau from acquiring and developing a new city park on U.S. 61.

A five-mile electric line between Morley, Mo., and Benton, Mo., will be rebuilt and a new line extended from Benton to Commerce, Mo., a distance of seven miles, by the Missouri Utilities Co.

100 years ago: May 17, 1912

The Isle de Luzon, bearing the St. Louis naval reserves, reaches Cape Girardeau at noon and anchors in the center of the river off of Broadway where it will remain until tomorrow morning; a throng of about 2,000 people greeted the boat on its arrival; the crowd continues to increase until the levee is filled with people desiring to view the famous ship that Admiral G. Dewey captured at Manila Bay.

R. Feldhoff, proprietor of the Cape Girardeau foundry on Main Street, and Arthur Bock, one of his employees, came close to losing their lives at closing time yesterday; they were badly and painfully burned by molten metal.
