Annual spring mission festival is held at Hanover Lutheran Church; the Rev. Jarold Rux is guest presenter for adult Bible class and guest preacher for morning worship service; Rux has been associate director of development with LCMS World Relieve since March.

The Rev. Bill Bernauer conducts worship service in morning at 172-year-old Apple Creek Presbyterian Church near Pocahontas; following service, basket dinner is served on church grounds; visitors also tour cemetery adjacent to church grounds; cemetery and grounds are maintained through gifts of friends members of families from early days of church.

25 years ago: May 16, 1978

Lutesville, Mo. -- More than 200 Woodland R-4 schoolchildren poured out of school buildings during their lunch periods yesterday to join picketing parents protesting what they claim has been excessively severe punishment of pupils by teachers; protesters don't return to Woodland today, and school is in normal operation, reports superintendent Richard Trout.

Chaffee, Mo. -- Growing frustrations of dealing with financial problems in school district was evidenced last night when one board member voted against motion to pay current bills.

50 years ago: May 16, 1953

Struggle over consolidation of five rural school districts into one unit was resolved yesterday by huge outpouring of voters who approved unification plan; when ballots were counted, plan received bettered than two-to-one victory; by vote, children of Horrell, Liberty, Apple Creek Valley and Buckeye school districts will now be required to attend school at Oak Ridge, a 12-year unit.

In setting carrying out theme of coronation of Queen Elizabeth of England, in colors of royal purple and with crown, jewels and crossed swords, junior class of Jackson High School entertained seniors and guests Friday night in gymnasium with banquet and ball; Mary Hagans was crowned prom queen.

75 years ago: May 16, 1928

With signature of President Coolidge attached to flood bill, next step in comprehensive plan for control of mighty waters of Mississippi River will be adoption by board of engineers of plan of procedure and voting by Congress of appropriation to carry on work; executive approval of plan came little more than year after waters of Mississippi roared their way over millions of farmland in worst flood in nearly 100 years.

Plans are being made for dedication Sunday of new Emanuel Evangelical Church in Jackson; building and equipment cost about $35,000; Linus Penzel, builder, will hand over keys of church to the Rev. Jankowsky, pastor, and doors will be opened, the congregation marching into modern edifice.
