JEFFERSON CITY Mo. -- The Missouri Highway and Transportation Commission has rejected a plea that it change its choice of routes across the city of Cape Girardeau to its planned Mississippi River bridge; the commission confirms the highway will be built along the College Street corridor rather than following Highway 74.

After serving as acting director for more than two years, Guy Lowes officially has been appointed director of the Public Works Department for the city of Cape Girardeau.

1963

Jackson community leaders, expressing unanimous approval of a four-lane pavement linking the county seat and Cape Girardeau, urge a joint meeting of representatives from the two cities to map out a plan of action.

The Kage School District may seek to become a part of the Cape Girardeau system, and the Cape Girardeau Board of Education agreed last night not to discourage the effort.

1938

Adam H. Hoffman of Jackson, former sheriff of Cape Girardeau County, is appointed by U.S. Marshal William B. Fahy as a deputy marshal, succeeding Charles G. Macke, who resigned several weeks ago.

Baccalaureate services for both Cape Girardeau Central High School and the Teachers College will be tomorrow; the college graduates will hear Dr. Henry G. Harmon, president of William Woods College at Fulton, Mo., in the morning at the Academic Hall auditorium; delivering the sermon in the evening for Central graduates will be Dr. H.H. McGinty, pastor of First Baptist Church, also in Academic's auditorium.

1913

Edwin F. Hillebrand of Warrenton, Mo., has been selected by the Cape Girardeau Board of Education to succeed J.N. Crocker as principal of the city high school; he was recommended to the board by Crocker, the new superintendent of schools.

Louis LaCroix, a prominent farmer living about a quarter of a mile from Dutchtown, is thrown from a wagon in the morning while hauling logs for A.E. Feuerhahn and seriously injured; he was traveling the road leading into Dutchtown, when one of the wheels struck a rut and he was thrown to the ground; one of the heavy logs pins him to the ground until help arrived.
