25 years ago: May 14, 1984

Between 150 and 200 people living near the proposed Cape Girardeau landfill on Highway 177 are told to pressure Cape Girardeau City Council members and the owners of the site to stop it; the people turn out for a public meeting at Nell Holcomb Elementary School.

Paul Kitchen, a native of Cape Girardeau and a former Cape Girardeau educator, has been hired as principal at Delta High School.

50 years ago: May 14, 1959

A renovation program that is expected to cost about $70,000 will be started June 1 on St. Mary's School; the contract will be awarded to the Lambert C. Drury construction firm; one of the major items will be renovation of the kitchen, and all classrooms will be remodeled.

The move to establish a community building to serve the people of the Smelterville area advances further with the drafting of articles of incorporation and by-laws for the Cape Girardeau Civic Center; the Civic Center will administer the community building.

75 years ago: May 14, 1934

The Capahas christened their new baseball park yesterday with a 6-5 win over the Charleston, Mo., Cardinals, avenging a 12-inning defeat last week at Charleston; everything went well at the opening ceremony, including Mayor Edward L. Drum's toss of the first ball.

Members of Cape Girardeau's board of health adopt a resolution addressed to the city council asking that immediate action be taken toward construction of a sanitary sewer system at the extreme west end of the city as a measure to protect the health of the residents.

100 years ago: May 14, 1909

Eggimann Bros. general store at Dutchtown was robbed last night; the burglar got $1.75 in change out of the money till of the store and replenished his wardrobe; he helped himself to a hat, suit of clothes, underwear, shirt, suspenders and a pair of shoes.

The Jackson School Board elects teachers for the coming year: Bernice Limbaugh, Hattie Medley, Myrtle Dunn, Jessie Harris, Martine LaPierre, Lydia Kies, Hazel Henderson and Sarah Davis; L.L. Lemax was elected as teacher of Lincoln School.
