CAIRO, Ill. -- The National Weather Service office here again has narrowly escaped the budget ax with the approval yesterday by the U.S. House of a $5 billion emergency supplemental appropriation bill; the bill contains operating funds for the Cairo station and 17 others around the country.
A Cape Girardeau lumber company that has been in business more than 44 years will soon close its doors; the holdings of L.H. Landgraf Lumber Co., 1459 Independence St., will be sold to the highest bidder at a trustee's sale on the south steps of the county courthouse in Jackson on June 8.
The annual cleanup week program gets underway in Cape Girardeau with special appeals from city officials and business men for community cooperation; not only is cleaning up urged, but a general program of painting and fixing up is suggested.
