Superintendent Louis J. Schultz announces that Robert Brooks, principal of May Greene School, is taking a position in St. Louis County and has returned his Cape Girardeau contract; Brooks had been principal here five years.

Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Keys and children ViAnn, Monta Sue and Eddie Ray have returned home after attending funeral services in Choctaw, Okla., for Keys' father, Chief Clarence W. Keys, the Choctaw Indian who had become widely known throughout the nation as a circus entertainer, showman and lawman; he died last Tuesday.

The cornerstone for the new parochial school building for St. Paul Lutheran Church in Jackson is placed during an afternoon ceremony, with the Rev. W.G. Langehennig, pastor of St. Paul Church, officiating.

BENTON, Mo. -- A cache of seven U.S. Army rifles, stolen last night from the National Guard Armory at Cairo, Ill., is found in the woods near here.

100 years ago: May 12, 1910

Grading work on William Street has been halted by some property owners who feel their property is being damaged; D.A. Frank and Edward Roth, who live on William between Middle and Fountain streets, have asked the Common Pleas Court to restrain C.C. Hawley from further work because the old Gonner grade is not being followed.

A dozen lives were lost when the steamer Saltillo of the St. Louis and Tennessee Packet Co., struck a rock near Glen Park, Mo., last night and went down in a few minutes into more than 20 feet of water; the boat had a passenger list of 27, among them being several from Chester, Ill., and Cape Girardeau; Magnus Dempsey of this city managed to make his escape to shore.
