The city of Cape Girardeau doesn't plan to replace the Wilson Road bridge over Cape LaCroix Creek in Shawnee Park, nor the East Cape Rock Drive bridge over Juden Creek near Twin Trees Park for at least five years; the Shawnee Park bridge was closed last week, while the East Cape Rock span has been closed since July 1985.

After about 90 minutes of discussion among residents of a neighborhood that would contain a proposed juvenile group home, the Cape Girardeau Planning and Zoning Commission rejects the request for a permit to construct the facility along Flora Avenue, at the south end of Koch.

1963

A fire early in the morning destroys the two-story residence of Charles Godwin and Robert Weber in Pocahontas and does considerable damage to a store and post office owned by Lloyd Schattauer; fire-fighting units from Jackson and Altenburg battle the blaze which threatens several other buildings.

About 45 persons attend a meeting at St. James A.M.E. Church to plan the establishment of a nursing home for blacks here.

1938

The Fornfelt Board of Education has elected C.E. Brewer, for 10 years high school principal, as superintendent of schools; he succeeds Ralph Edmundson, who will become head of the schools at New Madrid, Mo.

Sunday will be Straw Hat Day in Cape Girardeau, and merchants are prepared to offer the male toppers at a nominal sum up to $7.50; straw hats will range from pinch tops and panamas to milans and sailors, with ventilated and novelty numbers to be offered too.

1913

The Rev. J.W. Stiger is the guest preacher at both the morning and evening worship services at St. James A.M.E. Church.

Mrs. Mattie Petermann of Jackson has traded the old Democrat newspaper property on Themis Street and the old Harris residence at 108 S. Spanish St., to J.H. Miller of Millersville for his 160-acre farm in Illinois, across the river from Cape Girardeau.
