With the spring semester wrapping up this week, Southeast Missouri State University announces its administrative offices will return to a five-day work week in the summer, having operated on a four-day schedule the past two summers.

Residents of the Crystal Springs Estates and Westlake Meadows, just southwest of Klaus Park, prefer to be annexed by Jackson rather than Cape Girardeau; residents there have submitted a petition to the joint Cape Girardeau-Jackson annexation committee indicating their preference.

50 years ago: May 11, 1962

A special election to decide the controversial public-housing issue becomes almost a certainty, when initiative petitions are submitted to city clerk Verna L. Landis; the petitions were signed by 1,735 citizens asking the city council to either pass a cooperative agreement with the Cape Girardeau Housing Authority or to give the voters the chance to do so.

A.S.J. Carnahan of Ellsinore, Mo., U.S. ambassador to Sierra Leone, and Allen L. Oliver, Cape Girardeau lawyer and past president of the Missouri Bar, are announced as recipients of the 1962 Outstanding Alumni Awards from State College.

75 years ago: May 11, 1937

All members of the Teachers College faculty have been re-elected by the board of regents; no changes were made in the salary scale for teachers or other employees.

EAST PRAIRIE, Mo. -- Flood refugees from the Birds Point-New Madrid Floodway are moving home, convinced of the safety of the district that had been threatened by the rise of the Mississippi River.

100 years ago: May 11, 1912

Hundreds of reproachful eyes are turned to the lead-colored clouds in the morning, and the weatherman certainly comes in for many unkind thoughts; after months of work, the big high school track and field meet at the fairgrounds may turn into a soggy mess; organizers of the competition say the athletic program will continue this afternoon, rain or shine.

Permission has been granted to Big Bend Telephone Co. to use the public road right of way of the Cape Girardeau and Middle Egypt Mills Road to erect and maintain a telephone system.
