25 years ago: May 10, 1986

A small but enthusiastic crowd of supporters shows up for the "Hands Around the Mall" project, which is a promotional exercise for the national fundraiser "Hands Across America," at West Park Mall; the line of volunteers stretches from the north side entrance of the J.C, Penney store to the front entrance of the mall.

Dr. Linda Godwin, who will be promoted to astronaut in NASA's space shuttle program this August, urges graduates to "be captains" of their destinies during commencement exercises at Houck Stadium.

50 years ago: May 10, 1961

A half-foot is knocked off the predicted crest for the Mississippi River at Cape Girardeau, the new high being set at 39 feet Friday night; at Cairo, Ill., the crest is expected next Monday at 54 feet on the Ohio River.

Ida Daume has been named "Woman of the Year" for 1960-1961 by the Business and Professional Women's Club; Daume, chief operator of Southwestern Bell Telephone Co., was nominated for the honor by the Trinity Guild of Trinity Lutheran Church.

75 years ago: May 10, 1936

Approximately 200 Lutheran young people attend the annual spring mission rally of Zone 7 of the Walther League in the afternoon and evening at the Egypt Mills Lutheran Church.

C.S. Mayberry, a lay reader from Immanuel Episcopal Church in Webster Groves, Mo., has charge of the morning service at Christ Episcopal Church here.

100 years ago: May 10, 1911

By order of Cape Girardeau Mayor F.A. Kage, police here will tolerate no selling of liquor of any kind on Sunday, violation of the order being the instant revocation of the dram shop's license; the spectacle of 20 drunken men on the streets last Sunday and the shooting of a woman by her husband in a drunken carousal has aroused the indignation of the law-abiding element in the city.

The new Hippodrome, "Cape's place of amusement," will open tomorrow night; for 10 or 15 cents, patrons will be treated to a high-class vaudeville act and moving pictures.
