25 years ago: May 1, 1983

Later this month, the House of Discernment, a place where young women considering the call to religious life may experience community living, will move from Ritter Drive, across from Notre Dame High School, to the School Sisters of Notre Dame House, 607 William St.; in August a new director, Sister Loretta Vetter, OSF, will replace Sister Doris Moore, DC.

During the past three months, First Freewill Baptist Church, 200 Broadway, has been undergoing repairs; most recently, the steeple was given a fresh coat of white paint by steeplejack Frank Kines.

50 years ago: May 1, 1958

A ruling from the office of the attorney general deals a smashing blow to city, road district and county highway construction and maintenance programs; the opinion is that any salaried corporate employees used for construction or maintenance work most be paid at least the prevailing wage for the type of work done.

Mavis Holmes, dean of students at State College since 1948, announces she will take a position as associate dean of students at Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls.

75 years ago: May 1, 1933

A small biplane, carrying two passengers from Park's Airport in East St. Louis, Ill., to Kennett, Mo., sustained smashed landing gear and a damaged fuselage early yesterday afternoon in a forced landing on a field near Juden School; there were no injuries.

Judge Frank Kelly gives instructions to the newly sworn Circuit Court grand jury; it will investigate safety on railroad switches, cigarette sales to minors, boys younger than 18 smoking cigarettes in public, fees of officials, borrowing of school money, fish and game laws, stock gambling, crap shooting, slot machines and gambling machines.

100 years ago: May 1, 1908

The Jackson High School track team, made up of Joe Williams, Louis Hoffman, Frank Smith, Shirley Smith, Earl Williams, Homer Williams, Butch Mueller and Wilson Cramer, leave for Columbia, Mo., to take part in the state high school track meet.

A new barber shop opened for business yesterday at the corner of Sprigg and Good Hope streets; W.S. Vancil is the proprietor.
