Cape Girardeau director of elementary education, Richard Bollwerk, also will be assigned as principal of Washington Elementary School for coming year; school board made that decision at special meeting Wednesday attended by about 35 people; board had earlier proposed to eliminate full-time principal at the school in order to cut school district costs.
Board of Regents at Southeast Missouri State University votes to delay action on proposed tuition hike to allow time for university's Budget Review Committee to look at additional cost-cutting moves.

Fruitland Fire Department answers its first fire alarm since organizing last month; volunteers race to Hale's 5-H Animal Ranch near Jackson and, along with Millersville Fire Department, help save ranch's main barn; another barn, housing more than 2,500 bales of hay and several animals, including llamas, horses and goats, is destroyed; all animals are saved, however.
Corps of Engineers believes measures can be taken to protect west end from repeat of disastrous flood which struck two weeks ago; whether it is economically feasible will be left up to Congress; Ken Porter, project engineer, believes that justification can be found for project, but actual data must be gathered and Congress persuaded before any appropriation is made.
50 years ago: April 9, 1952
J.S. McBride, who Monday was assigned as city park commissioner, says he will recommend soon formation of Municipal Park Board with which he will work to establish long-range plan of park improvement; he explains that when Cape Girardeau years ago voted tax for maintenance of parks, it required that park board be established; for some reason, this was never done.
Cape Girardeau milkshed is again ranked with best in Missouri and wins right for second straight year to be represented among select group of communities certified to U.S. Public Health Service for publication in its national listing of approved milk supplies.
75 years ago: April 9, 1927
Break in drainage canal levee four miles northeast of McClure, Ill., late yesterday resulted in less than 200 acres of lowland being flooded, and with Mississippi River receding, damage is expected to be slight; canal empties into Clear Creek, tributary stream of Mississippi River, and break resulted from overflow back water from swollen stream.
Kelso - Constant J. Dohogne, 84 years old, for 72 years prominent resident of north section of Scott County and one of pioneers in that district, died at his home in Kelso yesterday; veteran of Civil War, he was one of leaders in formation of St. Augustine Catholic Church at Kelso.
