Speaking to an ad hoc group of area business and civic leaders, Dr. John Crowe promotes a flood-control project for Cape Girardeau involving development of a green belt area for parks and recreational use, patterned after one in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Use of the name SEMO as an acronym for Southeast Missouri State University no longer may be used in university-generated formal text under a new policy adopted by the university board of regents.

50 years ago: April 6, 1962

Jackson city government and the city building inspector are ordered to issue a building permit to William H. and Kathryn Daniels for the construction of an addition to the Jackson Frozen Food Center to be used as a slaughterhouse; Judge W.O. Slater issues the order in Common Pleas Court.

Prizes are given out in the evening to end the sixth annual Southeast Missouri Regional Science Fair at Houck Field House; John D. Rigdon of Chaffee, Mo., and Stuart Landrum Jr., of Farmington, Mo., win the expense-paid trip to compete in the National Science Fair-International at Seattle.

75 years ago: April 6, 1937

A large delegation of landowners living in the Iona School and Egypt Mills communities appeared before the county court yesterday to protest the proposed extension of Highway SV, the Cape Girardeau-Egypt Mills farm-to-market road, from Egypt Mills to Neelys Landing.

Mauer Auto & Carriage Co. will soon have some of the park benches it is making for the city finished; the company is building 50 new park seats and is rebuilding 40 others from which the wood was burned in the Community Clubhouse fire.

100 years ago: April 6, 1912

Floodwaters south of Cape Girardeau have scrambled the train schedules; the northbound Frisco train doesn't arrive here until after 9 a.m., about six hours late; the through trains from St. Louis to Memphis had been detouring over the Cotton Belt from Rockview, Mo., to Jonesboro, Ark., but as part of the Jonesboro road is underwater, that service has had to be abandoned.

Genevieve Hoch returns home on the steamer Cape Girardeau after spending a few days in St. Louis as the guest of Mrs. Capt. William Leyhe.
