Cape Girardeau voters give four-year city council terms to the city's incumbent mayor and three councilmen, while granting two-year terms on the council to a former city administrative assistant, an university English instructor and a Procter & Gamble manager; Mayor Howard C. Tooke retains his office by a large margin; four-year term winners are Loretta Schneider, Donald R. Strohmeyer and Robert K. Herbst; rounding out the council are Mrs. Cecelia "Skeets" Sonderman, Curtis S. Smith and Dr. Peter Hilty.
Burglars, who leave a cupid's heart etched in whipped cream on the floor as a trademark, tear a hole in the roof of the Child's IGA Foodliner and steal an estimated $200 to $250 in change and an undetermined quantity of merchandise; the burglary occurs three weeks from the date of a similar raid on the Ward Big Star Supermarket here.
James V. Parker of Phoenix, formerly of Cape Girardeau, has been appointed an arts and crafts specialist by the Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department; Parker has been living there for the past nine years.
Casting a record vote, Cape Girardeau yesterday re-elected Mayor Edward L. Drum to another two-year term, defeating Rush H. Limbaugh; city commissioners selected were Edward Willer, E.P. Ellis and Louis Wittmor; A.M. Spradling and Dr. John D. Porterfield were elected to the school board.
Cape Girardeau's outer boulevard is rapidly taking form, and beautification of entrances to the city is being accomplished in an impressive manner.
John C. Kenney, formerly secretary and general manager of Archbishop Glennon's colonization society, has completed the organization of the Farmers' Land and Colonization Co.; it is working on a new Catholic colony to be located at Dudley, Mo., in Stoddard County.
The votes having been counted, it is learned that T.E. McNeely was elected Cape Girardeau County school superintendent at the election Tuesday.
