25 years ago: April 30, 1983

Speaking at a news conference at the Cape Girardeau Municipal Airport, part of a tour of Southeast Missouri, U.S. Sen. John C. Danforth says an acceptable military solution in El Salvador is probably impossible, but the withdrawal of military support by the United States would be disastrous.

Still another Mississippi River flood, egged on by heavy rains the past few days, is on the way; the Mississippi River is at 37.9 feet, up 2.4 feet from yesterday; it is expected to crest Wednesday at 39.7 feet.

50 years ago: April 30, 1958

It will be a homecoming of sorts when Franklin Trickey of Memphis, Tenn., brings his orchestra to Jackson on Saturday to play for the American Legion's anniversary dance; he was born and lived there until he was about 14.

Arguments by the city and its opponents on the municipality's petition for a declaratory judgment allowing it to hold an election on annexation of territory to the south, west and north are heard by Common Pleas Judge Robert G. Brady; Brady takes the matter under advisement.

75 years ago: April 30, 1933

The Rev. Leo M. Willard, pastor of the Methodist church at Oak Ridge, is among four ministers from rural Missouri attending the seventh annual Rural Church School in session at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn.

Workers are remodeling the St. Avit building, 199 Independence St., in Cape Girardeau; the exterior is being stuccoed and the interiors refinished and replastered; J.T. Firestone, local contractor, is doing the work; Dr. John St. Avit owns the building.

100 years ago: April 30, 1908

Capahas manager Joe V. Goldbaum receives a letter from the manager of the Festus, Mo., team with a contract for membership in the Southeast Missouri League, to be composed of Festus, Ste. Genevieve, Bonne Terre, Flat River, Farmington and perhaps Cape Girardeau; the contract specifies that the Caps' management must post $200 in a bank to insure the club playing the entire season.

Tomorrow, a sixth free delivery mail carrier will be added to Cape Girardeau's post office force; John Sample, who has been substituting for some time, will be given the new position.
