WASHINGTON -- U.S. Rep. Bill Emerson of Cape Girardeau has asked President Reagan to pardon Puxico, Mo., farmer Wayne Cryts, who was jailed by a federal bankruptcy judge this week for contempt of court.

The first-ever Southeast Missouri Hospital Outstanding Service Awards were presented last night to two longtime supporters of the hospital; in recognition of their many years of service, the hospital's board of directors chose to present the awards to Arthur F. Deneke and Robert D. Harrison.

50 years ago: April 30, 1957

Principals of Cape Girardeau Public Schools will be asked next fall to submit to the board of education a report on the progress teachers under their supervision are making under an incentive section of a salary schedule now in operation.

James C. Lerret, a student at the Episcopal Theological Seminary at Austin, Texas, has accepted an invitation to become rector of Christ Episcopal Church in Cape Girardeau; Lerret will begin his duties here around June 1.

75 years ago: April 30, 1932

Louis A. Steinhoff retires from office as Cape Girardeau city assessor and will be replaced Monday by J. Cal Reed; Steinhoff, who took office two years ago, says he has no plans for future employment.

Mrs. Joseph Haas, daughter Cordelia and Laura Igel, all of Cape Girardeau, will leave Monday for New York and will sail May 5 for Europe, where they will spend the summer; Haas and her daughter will visit relatives in Alsace-Lorraine, while Igel will spend the summer in Germany.

100 years ago: April 30, 1907

Information comes from Jackson that a big meeting of residents will be held there tomorrow to discuss the advisability of forming an independent telephone company; farmers in the north part of the county are beginning to see the advantages of telephones in their homes.

Haarig is having a building boom; Theodore Bauerle and the Nenninger brothers are building a double, two-story brick building on the north side of Good Hope Street, between Frederick and Sprigg streets, and H.A. Nussbaum will build a big addition to his store as soon as the weather permits.
