The Jackson Chamber of Commerce has endorsed a $500,000 bond issue proposal which, if approved by two-thirds of the Jackson voters June 3, will be used to help finance construction of the new Jackson public safety building; plans are to build the 13,000-square-foot facility on the northwest corner of the highways 61, 72 and 25 intersection.

A school that has undergone three metamorphoses in its 65-year history will be rededicated on the 15th anniversary of its latest function as the city's seventh-grade attendance center.

50 years ago: April 29, 1955

Cape Girardeau's Civil Defense organization has joined a nationwide effort to provide identification tags for every man, woman and child as a means of safeguarding the family unit in case of attack or other disaster.

The operation of Cape Girardeau's public schools next year is expected to cost $753,977, it is shown in the annual budget adopted last night by the school board.

75 years ago: April 29, 1930

An excellent attendance of Cape Girardeau women who are interested in home problems and home-making opens the first day of The Missourian's fourth-annual cooking school in Houck Field House, under the direction of Louise Dixon, noted home economics expert and lecturer; the platform in the field house has been transformed into a charming and modern apartment of living room, dining room and kitchen for the lectures.

The lagoon in Fairground Park is at "low tide"; dry weather has caused evaporation of the water until the water level in the lagoon is nearly three feet below normal stage; the water is lower than it has been for many months.

100 years ago: April 29, 1905

Charles Mortonson, building superintendent for Louis Houck, is in Jackson, where he is starting work on a passenger station for the Houck road; it will be built of blue stone from the local quarries, will be one story, have a large waiting room, a baggage and express room, and around the station will be a fine lawn.

The directors of the Fair Association has appointed a committee to secure plans and cost estimates for the construction of a handsome club house on the fairgrounds; a two-story frame building will be built, which will contain club rooms, parlors, a banquet room, retiring rooms and wide verandahs.
