A wooded area immediately west of the Cape Girardeau landfill is looking more and more like the city dump, says property owner J.E. Deevers, who wants the city to clean up the land.

A Senate resolution to name the multipurpose building now under construction on the Southeast Missouri State University campus in honor of Sen. John Dennis is complimentary of the senator's efforts toward the joint city-university project; however, some say the Senate shouldn't be in the business of naming buildings.

50 years ago: April 28, 1961

Rush H. Limbaugh Jr., secretary of the Municipal Airport Board, reports receipt of notice of renewal of Ozark Air Lines service through Cape Girardeau for an indefinite period.

Pouring of concrete has been completed for the ground floor of a new two-story building on the site of the former Broadway Fruit Market, 616 Broadway; originally it was planned to reduce the old building to a two-story level to match the adjoining Social Security building; however, because of damage done by a fire in the old structure, it was found necessary to raze it and build a new one.

75 years ago: April 28, 1936

President Roosevelt is still the favorite of Cape Girardeau voters, based upon a poll of 417 Girardeans made by a Teachers College class; the vote, according to the poll, was 262 for Roosevelt and 155 against; the poll also found Girardeans support the policies of the New Deal.

City council members are considering a plan that would have members of the fire department prepare meals for prisoners in the city jail; meals are now supplied under contract, with the city paying 50 cents a day for the meals per prisoner, with two meals served daily.

100 years ago: April 28, 1911

The Cape Girardeau council of the Knights of Columbus is 5 years old and has grown wonderfully; the institution's anniversary will be observed at St. Vincent's Church on Sunday morning, at which the beautiful music performed at Easter will be used.

The Cape Girardeau School Board has elected G.H. Reavis of Columbia, Mo., to succeed John Laidlaw as superintendent of the public schools here.
