McCLURE, Ill. -- Two adult bookstores here will remain closed as the result of a settlement between the store owners and the Alexander County state's attorney's office of charges stemming from a raid on the stores; the stores were shut down after a raid April 9, and a large number of adult books, films and magazines were confiscated.

A decision could come tomorrow night on what, if any, Public Administration Service recommendations the city of Cape Girardeau should implement in the police department, says Mayor Howard C. Tooke, who notes the special city council meeting will afford the council its first chance to discuss the PAS report in depth.

50 years ago: April 27, 1956

House and Senate approval last night of a conference committee report allocated Cape Girardeau State College a $2,740,000 building fund from state bond money with which to construct an urgently needed science building, a women's education building and a practical arts building.

Charles Knote says more horses and vehicles -- wagons, buggies, carriages, etc., of a horse-drawn nature -- are needed for next week's sesquicentennial program involving the burial of "Jim Razor"; he urges anyone who could lend horses or wagons to contact Herman Todt.

75 years ago: April 27, 1931

Street paving in Cape Girardeau with concrete today would cost anywhere from one-fourth to one-fifth less than two years ago, according to figures compiled by city engineer E.L. Sailer; the figures, based on the present prices of materials and labor, were compiled at the suggestion of Commissioner Louis Wittmore in an effort to stimulate street building during the coming months.

Hundreds of delegates are in Cape Girardeau for the 44th annual meeting of the Southeast Missouri I.O.O.F. Association, the meeting being held at Houck Field House.

100 years ago: April 27, 1906

The University of Arkansas baseball team trounced the Jackson Military Academy team yesterday at the Cape Girardeau fairgrounds by a score of 19-5.

The ladies of the Wednesday Club are making extensive preparations to celebrate the centennial anniversary of the incorporation of Cape Girardeau; on May 8 and 9, special exhibits will be displayed at the Normal School reflecting the early history of the city; on May 9, exercises will be held at the Normal auditorium, consisting of musical numbers and three papers dealing with the city's history.
