More than 100 people turn out to clean up Cape Girardeau's parks, plant flowers and paint playground equipment during the Friends of the Park Day; the activity is part of the effort known as "Make Cape Shine."
John E. Carpenter, who has more than 25 years experience as a funeral service practitioner, and Bruce Dockins, a funeral director who has interests in two other area funeral homes, have purchased Lorberg Funeral Home, 433 S. Sprigg St., from Amanda Lorberg; she has been operating the business since the death of her husband last year.
50 years ago: April 25, 1962
A new limestone quarry operation providing 50 to 75 local jobs and representing a million dollar investment will begin soon in the Illmo area; the site is the Grays Point farm bought recently by the Westlake Quarry Co. of St. Charles, Mo., for $150,000.
Cape Girardeau's public works and engineering departments are in an all-out drive to patch the sanitary sewer network against the infiltration of surface water overloading the system; city engineer John R. Walther says the repairs are particularly necessary before the sewage treatment plant is built and put into operation.

Dr. Frank Connelly, one of the best-known Baptist missionaries, speaks at First Baptist Church twice; he has spent almost his entire life in China; he is here with his father, Arthur Connelly, for many years a plumbing and heating contractor at Shelbina, Mo.
Dr. Charles O. Neece, pastor of the First Pentecostal Church in Miami, and a former chiropractor in Cape Girardeau, fills the pulpit at the Assembly of God Church.
100 years ago: April 25, 1912
August Vogelsang, I.R. Kelso and J.W. Phillips left on the noon Frisco yesterday for Osceola, Ark., to see about the big contract that has been awarded to Vogelsang Bros. for building the courthouse at Blytheville, Ark.
Glenn Juden, who has been in the flooded district between Hayti, Mo., and Caruthersville, Mo., for the past month, returns home.
