BOSTON -- Archbishop Bernard F. Law, the leader of Boston's 2 million Roman Catholics and former leader of the Springfield-Cape Girardeau (Mo.) Diocese, is named cardinal by Pope John Paul II.

Faced with an approaching deadline, Cape Girardeau city officials are still awaiting a court ruling which should clarify which city funds can be used to make payments on $5 million in multipurpose building bonds; the city by noon Friday must deliver a $258,630 interest payment to Boatmen's Bank in St. Louis, paying agent on the bonds, to prevent default.

50 years ago: April 24, 1960

Dedication services are held for the Bethel Assembly of God Church, 2011 William St., which recently completed an auditorium started last July; the new building holds a full nursery department, as well as the 40-by-70-foot auditorium; it was constructed by the congregation.

The Rev. Leo Kampmann assumes his duties as pastor of St. Mary's Cathedral, coming here from St. Michael's Catholic Church in Fredericktown, Mo.

75 years ago: April 24, 1935

Edwin J. Deal, 72, an attorney and former Cape Girardeau banker, dies at his home, 205 Bellevue St.; he conducted the sale of the Cape Girardeau traffic bridge April 8 as special master and held a sale for the Cape Girardeau Building & Loan Association; he returned to his home immediately after that sale and had been confined to his bed since.

Al Brinkopf, owner of a wooded plot on the Outer Drive, directly opposite Ellis Park, has completed digging a 180-foot well; he plans to build a home at that point this summer.

100 years ago: April 24, 1910

The Rev. G.E. Heidel being absent from Cape Girardeau, the morning worship service at the German Methodist Church is conducted by Henry Haman.

Winter is making a comeback; the little flurries and spits of snow which fell to the ground yesterday made for considerable comment; but the wintery blizzard of today, with the driving snowstorm, adds to the stories of past blizzards; more cold temperatures are forecast, and orchardists and farmers are worried about the fruit and vegetables.
