The proposed new landfill site -- just west of the city's existing 60-acre landfill -- is unearthing opposition from surrounding residents and property owners; the major concern with the proposed site is the possibility that drinking water could be contaminated.

The Notre Dame Endowment Campaign has gone over its $1 million goal; $1,053,745 has been pledged to date.

50 years ago: April 23, 1961

The Franciscan Sisters, operators of Saint Francis Hospital, start their annual six-day retreat at the hospital chapel; the order has 23 sisters at the hospital, but six will remain on duty while the rest participate in a period of prayer and meditation.

CAIRO, Ill. -- The anticipated turnout for the Civil War Centennial yesterday and today in Cairo came through to make the event one of the most successful celebrations ever held here; nearly 20,000 persons lined the streets in the business district yesterday for the Loyalty Day Parade; today's highlight is an all-day river excursion to Columbus, Ky., attended by between 500 and 600 persons.

75 years ago: April 23, 1936

Principal Paul Jenkins of Central High School announces that a two-year football contract has been arranged between Central and Jackson High School, which will bring together these two gridiron rivals after a lapse of two years; the first game will be played on the Jackson field Nov. 13, this year.

L.A. Mudd, professional building removal contractor, is advertising the sale of used building material, having started work on the razing of the old J.H. Himmelberger residence; he is clearing the site to make room for a beautiful new home to be built for the Louis Hecht family.

100 years ago: April 23, 1911

SIKESTON, Mo. -- Several hundred prominent farmers of Scott County, and a large number of Sikeston residents, assembled at the city hall here Friday and passed resolutions condemning the Canadian reciprocity treaty now before Congress; since President Taft started this movement, the price of farm products has continually declined until it appears the profits from farming are doomed.

Mrs. Lena Kiehne and family of Jackson spend the day in Cape Girardeau visiting Henry Koeppel and family of South Benton street.
