Law enforcement authorities are concentrating their efforts on identifying the charred body of an apparent homicide victim discovered smoldering in a field near the intersection of Route KK and Interstate 55 in Cape Girardeau County early yesterday by a passing motorist.
A Rotary Club Group Study Exchange Team is getting a bird's-eye view of Southeast Missouri; the six-man team, composed of young Swedish businessmen, are touring businesses, factories and area Rotary Clubs this week before taking part in this weekend's Rotary District 609 Convention in Cape Girardeau.
Ground was broken Wednesday afternoon at 409 N. Clark Ave. for a new Elks Lodge; the one-story brick building will be just south of the Cape Memorial Co. and will face Clark Avenue.

Jessie Gamlin of Poplar Bluff, Mo., is nursing an injured back sustained when a northbound Frisco train derailed 3 miles north of Poplar Bluff yesterday; 14 other passengers were shaken up in the incident; Gamlin was returning to Cape Girardeau to resume her studies at State College.
Coming down near Farrar, Mo., late yesterday, a government balloon missed the Mississippi River by 3 miles and landed without harm to two officers riding in it and various instruments which were being tested; the balloon was making the tests in preparation for a stratosphere flight to be made from Rapid City, S.D., this summer.
The Commercial Club is in receipt of a letter from the Mississippi River Transportation Co., which proposes to build docks here and establish a new boat line; the secretary and president of the company will here within a week or 10 days with engineers to locate the docks.
The building next door to Vogelsanger's Hardware store on Main Street is being fitted up for a billiard hall and tobacco store for Nick LaCroix.
