1989

Speaking at a dedication ceremony yesterday evening at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Moving Wall, Charles E. Woodford, commander of American Legion Post 63, declared the wall is doing its part to help heal the wounds of local Vietnam veterans.

At the request of the Cape Girardeau County Commission, the county's nine-member planning commission is researching the possibility of moving toward countywide zoning.

1964

Cases for and against the construction of the State Conservation Commission building in the northwest corner of Capaha Park were heard yesterday by the city council; one of those speaking in opposition to the location was Mrs. Edward Mosley, who said it would be an eyesore and that "a concrete block building is a notoriously ugly type of building."

The Jackson Chamber of Commerce has voted to have president R.A. Fulenwider appoint a committee to find ways to attract more doctors to town; the announced departure of Dr. Joseph Hecker in the near future spurred the effort.

1939

The Mississippi River continues its slow march toward a 36- to 37-foot crest, forecast for either tomorrow or Sunday; the river today is at 35.7 feet; a number of houses in Smelterville's east side are taking on floodwaters, and about 30 families are being evacuated from the area; white families will be housed temporarily in the former armory hall on Broadway and in 16 rooms over the Coca Cola bottling plant at 15 S. Spanish St.; uprooted blacks will be sheltered in the recreation building in Smelterville and at St. James A.M.E. Church on North Street.

Sister Baptista, superior of Saint Francis Hospital here from 1904 to 1918, is visiting old friends here; for the past three years, she has been superior of the hospital at Appleton, Wis.

BENTON, Mo. -- The dedication of the new courthouse at Benton was held yesterday; Judge Frank Kelly served as master of ceremonies for the celebration, introducing Sen. T.R.R. Ely of Kennett, Mo., who was principal speaker.

Charles E. Mayer, proprietor of the Black Diamond Coal Co., has let the contract for his new, five-room bungalow to Vogelsang Bros.; the house will be built at the corner of Ellis and Morgan Oak streets.
