25 years ago: April 21, 1982

Hal B. Lehman, longtime business manager for Cape Girardeau public schools, receives the 1982 Golden Deeds Award in recognition of his 43 years in the service of education and his involvement in numerous civic activities; the award, presented by the Evening Exchange Club, highlights the annual Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce meeting.

A prominent Sikeston, Mo., lawyer and member of the University of Missouri Board of Curators, Robert A. Dempster, has pledged to donate $100,000 to Southeast Missouri State University as part of the school's $250,000 fund drive to renovate Dorington Apartments into office and classroom space for the College of Business.

50 years ago: April 21, 1957

The Revs. Elmer A. Kettner and O.A. Waech, both of St. Louis, are speakers for Easter sunrise services sponsored by the Lutheran churches of this area; Kettner preaches the sermon at the service conducted at the Park View Drive-in Theater at Jackson, while Waech speaks at the service held at the Star Vue Drive-in Theater on Highway 61 near Cape Girardeau.

Rain during the morning dampens the Easter observance in Cape Girardeau, but the afternoon is bright and sunny.

75 years ago: April 21, 1932

Faced with a reduction of $1,000,000 in the assessed valuation and the consequent loss of about $13,000 in revenue, the Cape Girardeau Board of Education is wrestling with a problem of operating the school system next year with a lower budget.

R.H. Brady has purchased the interest of A.W. Schwab in the People's Oil Co.; Schwab has been a large stockholder in the corporation for six years.

100 years ago: April 21, 1907

The Methodist congregation of Cape Girardeau holds its last service at its church at the corner of Ellis and Themis streets; it was sold recently to the Christian congregation.

Carrie A. Nation, the most famous woman Kansas ever turned out, arrives in Cape Girardeau from Poplar Bluff, Mo., where she lectured for two days; she will deliver several anti-saloon speeches here as well.
