25 years ago: April 21, 1980

Ousted circuit Judge Lloyd G. "Jerry" Briggs is abandoning his attempt to remain in the August primary election as a judge candidate and instead plans to file against state Sen. John C. Dennis.

A fifth candidate has entered the race for Jackson city marshal, and a contest has developed for two Ward 4 aldermanic seats as a result of a third candidate entering that race; Fred Wallington became the fifth man to file for marshal, and Edward Baker became the third candidate to file for Ward 4 alderman.

50 years ago: April 21, 1955

The alacrity with which Cape Girardeau National Guardsmen rolled into headquarters last night in response to "Operation Minuteman" should prove comforting to residents of the area who might, in an emergency, have to depend on them for their safety; with torrential rains adding punch to the drill, local guardsmen began pouring into headquarters within minutes of the alert.

Hard rains struck the Cape Girardeau area overnight, sending creeks and water courses rushing out of their banks, filling streets to above curb level, and causing considerable damage to unpaved streets.

75 years ago: April 21, 1930

PERRYVILLE, Mo. -- An alcohol still of 200 gallons daily capacity, the largest ever found in Perry County, was seized Saturday on a farm eight miles northeast of here, where Deputy Constable Oscar Hornberger was killed the previous midnight when he was accidentally shot by a fellow officer; a St. Louis man was arrested during the raid.

Arrangements have been completed by The Southeast Missourian for Louise Dixon, noted cookery authority, to conduct four free cooking school lectures next week at Houck Field House.

100 years ago: April 21, 1905

Iola Farrar, the popular young lady printer at the Progress office, is very sick with pneumonia; her father, J.K. Farrar of Mountain View, Mo., arrives to care for her.

The survey for the "belt line" which the Frisco Railroad is known to have in view was completed last week; the work has been in progress for some time, and now that it is completed, it is hoped that actual construction will begin soon; the line will branch off the main line above Cape Rock and will extend around the city in the west end and join the main line below town.
