The city engineering staff has been asked by Mayor Howard C. Tooke to come up with a plan that could lead to asphalt paving of all gravel streets in residential areas of Cape Girardeau.

Tipton Appliances Inc., a St. Louis retailer operating a number of outlets throughout this part of the Midwest, has leased 10,000 square feet of space in the south end of the Lowell's Jewelers and Distributors Inc. building at Bloomfield Road and South Kingshighway; the firm will open there in early June.

50 years ago: April 17, 1959

Mr. and Mrs. C.W. Weiss have sold their Cape Girardeau County farm to Mr. and Mrs. Jess Millikan, whose son, Homer, will go into Angus breeding; the farm had been in the Weiss family 112 years, having first been owned by Jacob Weiss, an immigrant from Brunswick, Germany.

BENTON, Mo. -- Sikeston, Mo., Mayor C.E. Felker has filed a petition in Circuit Court demanding a recount of the ballots cast last week in the city-manager election at Sikeston; the election, which culminated a bitter community campaign, was carried by 44 votes.

75 years ago: April 17, 1934

The $1 tax levy proposal, necessary for continued operation of Cape Girardeau's public schools, will be resubmitted to voters at a special election May 2; the school board voted on the issue last night, after receiving petitions by various parent-teacher units of the city.

Three new cabins are completed at the New Brown Owl on U.S. 61, operated by Otto Vogt; they are 8 by 16 feet, frame buildings; Vogt also had four new garages built at the motor court.

100 years ago: April 17, 1909

Judge Rudolph Bahn of the police court holds his first session of court in Cape Girardeau's new municipal building at the corner of Frederick and Independence streets; the new courtroom isn't yet fitted up, so the trial was held in the chief of police's office.

Thirty musicians, members of the Bonne Terre, Mo., band and orchestra, arrive in Cape Girardeau on the noon train and are met by professor H.L. Albert of the Normal School band; the visitors played at Ste. Genevieve, Mo., last night, and will play tonight at the Normal auditorium.
