The city council yesterday began filling municipal jobs; R.J. Kammer was renamed fire chief, as was city engineer John R. Walther; B. Hugh Smith was appointed city attorney and Jesse W. McCullough was appointed foreman of the street department crew.
There is a strong sentiment among the members of the musical organizations at Cape Girardeau Central High School and the parents of most of the children that the organizations should travel to Columbia, Mo., on April 29 to compete in the Class B division of the state high school meet; Central's musical groups made a clean sweep in its contest in the district high contests held in Cape Girardeau on Thursday.
From all appearances, Cape Girardeau will have a real police force after May 1; at the city council meeting last night, four new policemen were selected to serve with Jeff Hutson and George Talley, guardsmen of Haarig and upper Broadway, respectively; the new officers are Bernhard Gockel, Walker Johnson, Lee Atchison and Jim Green.
Contractors Harmon Loeffel and John Rouse begin excavating on Sprigg Street for the purpose of paving the thoroughfare from Themis Street to Jefferson Avenue.
