State Treasurer Mel Carnahan may not be a gubernatorial candidate, but he certainly sounds like one; in a speech at the 91st annual meeting of the Southeast Missouri Press Association, Carnahan blasts Missouri Gov. Kit Bond for lacking goals and leadership in addressing the issues of jobs, public education, upgrading of state roads and overall financial planning for state government.
Cape Girardeau's administrative staff has proposed Aug. 1 as the new target date for changing Broadway between Lorimier and Pacific streets from one-way back to two-way, exactly seven years after it was changed to one-way.

PERRYVILLE, Mo. — A countywide proposal to make all public schools of Perry County one school district was defeated at a special election yesterday; voters in Perryville balloted about 2 to 1 for the program, while some outlying areas were fairly solidly against the plan.
A 50-year membership pin was presented in behalf of the Illmo Masonic Lodge to John Craig of Cape Girardeau this week by the grand master, Frank Briggs of Macon, Mo.
75 years ago: April 16, 1933
The Senior Epworth League of the Maple Avenue Methodist Church holds a sunrise Easter service at Fort D; the Rev. C.P. Kirkendoll, the pastor, is in charge of the devotional service; after the worship, breakfast is cooked at the old fort.
The young people of the Church of God hold an Easter sunrise service at Cape Rock Park; the pastor, the Rev. J.H. Shirrell, speaks on "Resurrection Morn."
100 years ago: April 16, 1908
Several Broadway merchants and as many residents are heard emitting more epithets now than for a long time; the cause is the heavy rains which have seeped into the soil of upper Broadway and flooded the basements there; pumps can't keep up with the flood and merchants have lost hundreds of dollars worth of goods.
Joe Goldbaum has taken over the management of the Capahas baseball team; it is planned to bring Bill Barenkamp down from St. Louis and pay him to pitch for the team; Tom Collins, the crack catcher of the last few Normal School teams, will be behind the plate.
