Nell Holcomb School District officials are hoping voters will approve their dedication to the district in August when they vote on a 94-cent tax increase; two tax increases of the same amount have been defeated since November 1986.

Seven new police officers are sworn in by Cape Girardeau City Clerk Evelyn LeGrand: David B. Haggett, Perry Hazelwood, Curtis Session, Roger W. Fields, Phil Gregory, William T. Cooper Jr. and Kevin Eudy.

1963

The Cape Girardeau City Council is in complete harmony as it adopts an official city song; the tune, "A Rose for Cape Girardeau," was written by Mrs. Arthur Thilenius of Cape Girardeau and has been copyrighted; before taking action, the council hears a hummed version of the melody from City Attorney Raymond H. Vogel and City Commissioner J.W. Wieser.

The Jackson City Council discusses adding a canine division to its police force; Ben Schweer, city marshal, appears before the council to request permission to use a dog in some police work; he notes that policeman Robert Hilderman is planning on acquiring a police dog and will train it at no cost to the city.

1938

Hens are giving the Easter bunny a break this year, with enough eggs on the market so that the price is lower than it was last year at this time; eggs are selling for 15 to 17 cents, whereas a year ago they retailed at 19 cents.

Nine congregations here unite at Christ Episcopal Church for a three-hour Good Friday service; churches participating are Grace Methodist, Maple Avenue Methodist, Presbyterian, Third Street Methodist, Red Star Baptist, Centenary Methodist, Christian, Evangelical and Christ Episcopal.

1913

Norman M. Vaughn, editor and publisher of the National Elk's Horn, the official magazine of the Elks Lodge in America, is in Cape Girardeau with his assistant, A.E. Arbuckle; they are gathering material for a special edition the magazine will devote to the state convention to be held in Cape Girardeau in late May.

A.J. Vogel of New Wells buys one of the principal corners in Pocahontas from George W. Ruff; the lots are on Main and Green streets, and front on the best property in the Shawnee Township; building activities will begin at once.
