25 years ago: April 15, 1984

WOLF LAKE, Ill. -- A possible strike by teachers of the Shawnee Community 84 School District was averted here Friday night when the teachers yielded to the school board on the last major item in their contract negotiations; the teachers agreed to drop the district's two part-time elementary teachers, who are also part-time principals in the system, from the contract negotiations.

Suzanne Ewbank, a student at Southeast Missouri State University, is named Miss Southeast Missouri State in a pageant sponsored by Sigma Chi fraternity; she is now eligible to compete in the Miss Missouri Pageant in July.

50 years ago: April 15, 1959

A quarterly conference of Grace United Methodist Church voted almost unanimously yesterday for disposal of the church property at Independence and Sprigg streets through lease-purchase to Cape Girardeau; a final decision on the transfer will be made tonight at a dinner of the congregation; the city will use the old church building for a police headquarters.

Missouri Gov. James T. Blair sets a special election for April 28 to let Cape Girardeau County voters choose a judge of the Court of Common Pleas; the man elected will succeed Judge Robert G. Brady, who resigned to accept a position as a commissioner for the St. Louis Court of Appeals.

75 years ago: April 15, 1934

Crowds fill First Christian Church at both services to hear the new pastor, the Rev. Ira D. Crewdson, deliver his first sermons; the new pastor is a forceful speaker, and his sermons are filled with experiences of 10 years foreign mission service.

Alene Miller has been re-elected by the school board of the Marquette School district as teacher for next year; it will be her fourth term as teacher there.

100 years ago: April 15, 1909

H.H. Mueller is building a 10-room extension to what is known as the Yount Hotel on Main Street in Jackson.

Mrs. Allan R. Williams, whose husband is a lieutenant with the 24th U.S. Infantry, stationed at Fort Hamilton in Oswego, N.Y., arrives in Cape Girardeau on the noon Frisco train, accompanied by her little daughter, Margaret; they will visit Mrs. Williams' parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert H. Whitelaw.
