Hoping that the recent defeat of a proposed merger with the Chaffee, Mo., school district represents a change of heart, the Delta School Board yesterday unanimously approved bringing a 45-cent school property tax increase before the voters again.
The Mississippi River has taken another trip upward at Cape Girardeau, reaching a new flood crest in the morning in the wake of heavy rains; the river stands at 42.2 feet.
50 years ago: April 14, 1958
Burglars entered the Scoop Snak Shop in the 1200 block of Independence Street in Cape Girardeau on Saturday night and stole 100 pounds of cooked meat; the theft was reported by Charles Schlegel; the meat, valued at $70, consisted of 50 pounds each of pork and beef.
In a ceremony conducted in federal court by Judge Roy Harper, Paul Kreiss, a member of the faculty of Trinity Lutheran School, becomes a naturalized citizen of the United States; Kreiss was born in Riedisheim, France.
75 years ago: April 14, 1933
Observance of Good Friday in Cape Girardeau is featured in two special services, both sponsored by the Ministerial Alliance; the first is a three-hour service at Christ Episcopal Church, starting at noon; the other is an evening service at Christ Evangelical Church.
Fish, which have been in the municipal swimming pool at Fairground Park since September, may be back at their old home in the park lagoon next week, if the weather cooperates; recent rains have partly filled the enlarged lagoon.
100 years ago: April 14, 1908
Having leased the Schumer Springs Sanitarium Co.'s property in Perry County, manager C.H. Harris is prepared to accommodate those desiring treatment for the many diseases that have been so successfully treated at this place in the past two years; Dr. R.T. Henderson of Jackson is in charge of the sanitarium.
The three new Cape Girardeau councilmen — Joe Wilson, Alexander Vasterling and Herman Bock — are sworn in; one of the first pieces of business the new council takes up is the installation of a sewer system in district one, which takes in the central part of the city; an amendment is approved calling for bids to be advertised to do the construction work.
