National Weather Service has revised its flood crest for Cape Girardeau downward, but leery county and municipal officials say they'll stay on alert until crest passes Cape Girardeau, some time Saturday.

Former science professor David Stewart says he was unfairly terminated last year by Southeast Missouri State University administration because of his perceived support of Iben Browning's earthquake prediction in 1990.

25 years ago: April 14, 1979

Demolition of Trinity Lutheran Church, built in 1878, is just days away; in morning, crews begin tedious task of removing old church's 1,800-pound bronze bell from steeple.

Sandbag and flood evacuation operations in several locations in Cape Girardeau and Scott counties have been hampered to varying degrees by sightseers; county officials are warning people that they may be subject to arrest for creating nuisance in flooding areas.

50 years ago: April 14, 1954

Business houses in Cape Girardeau County subject to state sales tax did biggest volume of business in their history, figures released by Department of Revenue for 1953 and supplied by Rep. A.C. Magill show.

High school choral festival -- one of most popular spring events at State College campus -- promises to be bigger and better than ever this year, with 2,662 pupils from 43 district schools and two school symphony orchestras taking part; festival will be April 23.

75 years ago: April 14, 1929

Committee, headed by Alvin Haas, has been appointed to make arrangements for observance of 50th anniversary of ministry of the Rev. E. Pruente, pastor of St. Mary's Catholic Church; congregation will celebrate his golden jubilee June 2 to 9 with elaborate exercises.

The Rev. George S. Ellyson, whose resignation as pastor of First Baptist Church was presented last September and which congregation at that time voted not to accept, announces that he is quitting as pastor of church, effective immediately.
