Ken McDowell of Charleston, Mo., the pilot of a single-engine crop-duster, escaped injuries Friday when his plane crashed and burned in a field east of Lee Avenue in south Jackson.

A foundation is being prepared near Route K and Mount Auburn Road for a Savings of America Bank; a six-section modular building will be placed on the foundation this week; the bank is planning on a late May opening.

50 years ago: April 13, 1961

A new portion of Mount Auburn Road is being constructed west of the city limits and, when finished, will connect the Gordonville and Hopper roads; the 1 1/4-mile long route is a scenic one, going over two large hills; the road gets its name from Mount Auburn Cemetery, atop one of the elevations, which was the old Joyce family cemetery.

Twelve break-ins within the past week, seven Wednesday night, and the theft of more than $1,000 worth of scientific equipment from State College are cleared by Cape Girardeau police with the arrests of several college-age youths.

75 years ago: April 13, 1936

The Democratic County Central Committee is backing John S. Kochititzky's appointment as judge of the County Court from the second district to succeed Charles G. Wilson, newly elected mayor of Cape Girardeau; Gov. Guy B. Park will decide his replacement.

Cape Girardeau's new city council having been sworn in, members quickly make several major appointments in city departments, including police chief H.F. Wickham, succeeding E.W. Hirsch, and city counselor R.P. Smith, succeeding Frank A. Lowry.

100 years ago: April 13, 1911

Engineer William Carroll, on a train running between Chaffee, Mo., and St. Louis, receives serious internal injuries when his train runs into a landslide near Selma, Mo., and is wrecked.

Joseph F. Volkert, 85, dies at his home in Jackson; he was a native of Bavaria, Germany; Volkert was six years in the German army, fighting against Denmark in 1849; he came to Cape Girardeau in the 1850s and moved to Jackson in 1867, where he was cooper boss for the Petermann mills for 25 years.
