Leo L. Schade, a Jackson newspaperman for many years, files as a Republican candidate for Cape Girardeau County clerk; until recently, Schade published the Cape County Post, a Jackson weekly.

Luther Smith has been named superintendent of the Oak Ridge School District; he comes to his home school from Anniston, Mo., where he has been superintendent for eight years in the consolidated district.

75 years ago: April 12, 1937

A.R. Welch and Glenn Lewis have taken over the Diamond service station at the intersection of Sprigg and Themis streets, operated the last three months by Dale Hese; Welch had been with Montgomery Ward & Co. seven years and Lewis had been with the same firm eight years.

The first circus of the season will open in Cape Girardeau on Wednesday; Tom Mix, gallant cowboy screen star, will bring his show here from Blytheville, Ark., for a one-day stand on a lot on West Broadway.

100 years ago: April 12, 1912

Ferryman Capt. A.C. Jaynes reports the situation on the east side of the river is serious; water has covered a large area of the lowland farms and is steadily rising; he believes about half of the crops in the territory across from Cape Girardeau will be ruined.

A large crowd attends the first session of the Cape Girardeau County public school meet in Jackson, the exercises being held in the high school auditorium; the audience hears recitations and musical performances.
