25 years ago: April 11, 1984

More than a dozen years of service to the Cape Girardeau School District came to an official end last night when Dr. C. John Ritter stepped down from his seat on the school board; Ritter didn't seek re-election this year, and his seat was taken by Carolyn Kelly.

A Cape Girardeau labor union has filed a petition for bankruptcy in federal court in St. Louis; Laborers Local 282 cited assets of $81,927.56 and liabilities of $184,479.11 in seeking bankruptcy under provisions of Chapter 11.

50 years ago: April 11, 1959

Choral teachers and high school and college music students meet in the morning in Memorial Hall with Dr. Warner Imag, dean of the college of music at the University of Colorado, at a clinic, which serves as a follow-up to the great massed chorus that sang last night at Houck Field House; the facility was filled to capacity with 28,896 boys and girls from Southeast Missouri.

Judith Temple Hood, a University of Kansas senior from Cape Girardeau, won first prize and $125 in the second annual University of Kansas Big Eight Conference Student Art Competition.

75 years ago: April 11, 1934

Relief needs still exist in Cape Girardeau, says Mrs. O.E. Hulehan, Central Relief Organization representative; in fact, she says demands are slightly heavier now than in winter, because Civil Works Administration work has been ended.

The Lions Club votes to invite Gov. Guy B. Park or some other prominent resident of Missouri to come here during the week of April 23 and address a meeting of the local and district residents on the state bond issue proposal for rebuilding of the state eleemosynary institutions.

100 years ago: April 11, 1909

Easter services are celebrated in solemn fashion at St. Vincent's Catholic Church; a solemn high Mass is held in the morning, the celebrant being the Rev. O'Callaghan; musical features are provided by violinists Frieda Reick and Delia Schwepker, and celebrated saxophone soloist professor Joseph A. Vaeth.

The holiday is observed in a beautiful manner at the Jackson churches; decorations are elaborate and the music fine, such as Jackson choirs can furnish.
