25 years ago: April 10, 1985

Dorothy Phillips, who is serving her third term on the Jackson R-2 School District's Board of Education, has been elected president of the board; Bonnie Knowlan was selected vice president by acclamation.

Dr. Keith Deimund was elected president of the Cape Girardeau Board of Education during a reorganization session following last night's regular meeting; Deimund succeeds Dr. Thomas Harte; Catherine Otto was elected vice president.

50 years ago: April 10, 1960

The Palm Sunday Procession marks the beginning of Holy Week services at St. Mary's Cathedral; preceding the 10:45 a.m. Mass, palms are blessed at an outdoor altar in the Cathedral Plaza and are distributed to the congregation; the procession then travels out to William Street and into the church.

Jim Schmidt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Cletus Schmidt of Cape Girardeau, serves as youth pastor of the Red Star Baptist Church, speaking at both morning and evening services; he will lead other activities during the week.

75 years ago: April 10, 1935

Trapshooting, with clay pigeons as targets, is a new sport getting a grip on many Girardeans; at Cape Rock Sunday, seven locals tried their luck at the sport, including Walter W. Heath, Bert Butts, Raymond H. Brady, Orren Fee, Lonnie Hill, Leo Vogelsang and Glenn Kinder.

Despite an increased cost of food products of from 25 to 30 percent, Cape Girardeau hospitals haven't raised their rates to patients and are absorbing this cost.

100 years ago: April 10, 1910

The Rev. W.C. Swope, one of the most noted evangelists in the state, is preaching at Centenary Methodist Church every afternoon; a chorus of 50 voices is accompanied by a piano, cornet, trombone, base horn, violin, flute and drum.

Roy S. Hansford, former city editor of the Cape Girardeau News, has resigned his position with that newspaper to become assistant secretary of the Little River Drainage District.
