EAST CAPE GIRARDEAU, Ill. -- Two area men -- one from McClure, Ill., and the other from rural Cape Girardeau -- have been charged by federal authorities with arson in connection with the fire at the Purple Crackle Club here March 24.

In the wake of nationwide reports of pins and needles being found in cookies in at least 12 states, including Missouri and Illinois, area Girl Scouts are having trouble selling 752 boxes of cookies; the local Girl Scout Council has received no reports of vandalism to their product, however.

50 years ago: April 10, 1959

Keith R. Tolliver was re-elected president of the Cape Girardeau School Board, and committees were appointed to serve during the year at a reorganization meeting last night; Dr. H.V. Ashley Jr., and Willard Wagner, elected Tuesday, took their places on the board.

SIKESTON, Mo. -- Mayor C.E. Felker, in a council meeting Thursday night, said he doesn't plan to accept the results of the city manager form of government voting of Tuesday; he said he planned a recount of the ballots; the city-manager plan won voter approval by 44 ballots.

75 years ago: April 10, 1934

Members of Red Star Baptist Church are painting the interior of the church building; the various departments are responsible for painting their quarters; a new metal ceiling has been installed in the tabernacle, and painting of this will begin shortly.

The Rev. Ira D. Crewdson, new pastor of First Christian Church, accompanied by his wife and three sons, arrived late Monday from Michigan; they are temporarily residing in an apartment on South Lorimier Street.

100 years ago: April 10, 1909

The cadets from Jackson came over to Cape Girardeau yesterday and played a game of baseball against the Normal School team; the score was 6-0 in favor of Jackson.

The Capahas baseball team, under the leadership of Capt. Andrews, has a practice game in the afternoon and will have another tomorrow; the club is just getting together for the season and is preparing for the game with Chaffee on April 18, which will be played here.
