25 years ago: March 9, 1986

Regular gasoline in Sikeston, Mo., is selling for 56.9 cents per gallon as gas prices continue to fall; in Cape Girardeau, prices are a little higher at 79.9 cents a gallon.

Work continues on cleaning up an oil spill in the Mississippi River following Friday's barge accident near the Thebes, Ill., railroad bridge about 10 miles south of here; the spill was the third major one there since November.

50 years ago: March 9, 1961

Another old Cape Girardeau building is being remodeled; the three-story brick building at 616 Broadway, which housed Broadway Fruit Market for 40 years, will be reduced to a two-story structure with a new look to conform to the Social Security building next door; both buildings are owned by Wayne Rust.

Basketball makes a near-springtime exit from the Cape Girardeau scene tomorrow and Saturday nights in classic style at Houck Field House: The southwest regional tournament of the National Collegiate Athletic Association; the tourney is one of the eight being held nationwide; they bring together the best 32 small schools in the country, including the Indians of Southeast Missouri State.

75 years ago: March 9, 1936

A.P. Behrens, former city clerk and city commissioner, announces his candidacy for Cape Girardeau city commissioner subject to the approaching municipal election.

Two major construction proposals for Cape Girardeau -- New Lorimier school and double-track pavement along U.S. 61 at the west edge of the city -- have received Works Progress Administration approval in Washington, D.C.; however, no funds are available to begin the work.

100 years ago: March 9, 1911

The ladies, who have made such a success of the financial end of the Presbyterian Church, will show the people of Cape Girardeau how a newspaper should be run; the ladies will have charge of The Republican one day, issuing a special Easter edition that will publish April 7.

A second ticket for city officers to run in the April election is announced: Alex C. Vasterling for mayor; Earl Gramling, Sam Boutin, John Vandeven, Gus Vogelsang and N.S. Weiler for City Council.
