Petition seeking formation of levee district to protect West End area from flooding has been submitted to county circuit court, but organizers of petition drive point out that formation of such district is still some time off.

Home Helper Program, first of its kind in area, has been initiated by Southeast Missouri Hospital social service department; program is designed to fill needs of ill or elderly people who want to remain in their own homes, but who need physical help to do so.

50 years ago: March 8, 1954

Reorganization proposals of Cape Girardeau County rural schools will be placed before voters in six enlarged districts tomorrow; latest of four plans calls for establishment of districts with high schools at Jackson, Oak Ridge and Delta.

Papers conveying abandoned school properties and adjacent land are filed by two boards of education; Critesville's board acts to lease school and land to Critesville Extension Club; board at Randol acts to extend school and land to Randol Extension Club, also by lease agreement.

75 years ago: March 8, 1929

Submachine gun of high-powered type is received as additional equipment for Cape Girardeau Police Department; .45-caliber gun can fire 500 rounds per minute; in addition to purchase by law enforcement, officials of Cape Gir-ardeau banks are buying riot guns.

Shipment of cement by barge line from Cape Girardeau to St. Louis by Marquette Cement Mfg. Co. should begin within a month; product will be shipped in bulk.
