Republicans filled the Arena Building last night for the annual Lincoln Day celebration; keynote speaker was Richard McIntyre, who was involved in the controversial 1984 Indiana Congressional race in which the Democrat incumbent was seated after Indiana had declared McIntyre the winner.

Missouri Attorney General William Webster says he expects to establish a branch office in Cape Girardeau County during the latter half of this year to handle consumer fraud complaints.

50 years ago: March 7, 1961

A Delta post office break-in and an attempted break-in of a tavern there last night continued the wave of lawlessness in the district that since Saturday night has resulted in 15 burglaries; at the post office, thieves knocked the combination off a safe and tried, unsuccessfully, to punch it with a screwdriver.

Perkins and Will, a Chicago architectural and engineering firm specializing in school and hospital construction, will design a proposed new junior high school for Cape Girardeau; a contract was signed last night at a school board meeting.

75 years ago: March 7, 1936

Concrete is being poured for the footings of the new Knights of Columbus building in the 300 block of South Spanish Street; the foundation work will be completed next week, and bricklayers hope to begin erecting the walls within another two weeks; architect for the structure is A.F. Lindsay.

Mr. and Mrs. Louis Hecht announce they have purchased the dwelling of the late Mr. and Mrs. John H. Himmelberger at the northwest corner of North Sprigg and Bellevue streets; they will remodel the 12-room brick structure and will move there during the early part of summer from 404 Bellevue St.

100 years ago: March 7, 1911

The Cape Girardeau Water and Electric Light Co. has given notice to the city of an application for a new 25-year contract.

F.A. Kage has completed his "Citizens Ticket" for the spring election for city officers, five of the names chosen for places on the ticket being incumbents; on the ticket are F.A. Kage, for mayor; Willis Martin, marshal; Edward Willer, collector; W.H. Huters, assessor; R.H. Whitelaw, city attorney; Rudolph Bahn, police judge; and Louis Stein, treasurer.
