ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- Puxico, Mo., farmer Wayne Cryts, who took his soybeans from a bankrupt grain elevator in defiance of federal marshals last month, surrenders to federal officials; U.S. Magistrate William Bahn sets bond for Cryts at $1,000 during a brief hearing and orders the federal government to indict him or show probable cause by March 26.

An estimated crowd of 30,000 streamed through West Park Mall in Cape Girardeau for its public debut yesterday; Paul Oscarson, manager of the Famous-Barr store, says first-day volume exceeded that of the company's most recent openings in Alton and Springfield, Ill.

50 years ago: March 6, 1956

John L. Wieser, owner of the Remington-Rand agency in Cape Girardeau, files his petition at the city clerk's office to become the eighth man in the race for commissioner at the primary election March 20.

BREWER, Mo. -- A half-mile strip on Highway 61 a mile north of this Perry County town suffers windstorm damage in the evening, and rainfall is estimated at nearly two inches; numerous telephone poles are felled across the highway, and the tall line from Perryville, Mo., and Ste. Genevieve, Mo., and to St. Marys, Mo., is down, with numerous hanging wires.

75 years ago: March 6, 1931

Heralded by a driving rain and a promise of much lower temperatures, a cold wave out of the Rockies is reportedly roaring toward Cape Girardeau, leaving in its wake snow, sleet and cold March weather.

A long-term lease, covering extensive improvements to the room formerly occupied by the Idan-Ha Coffee Shop and the kitchen of the Hotel Idan-Ha, is signed by George Parker of Carbondale, Ill., for many years a successful restaurant operator there.

100 years ago: March 6, 1906

The county court met at Jackson yesterday and transacted only routine business; architect P.H. Weathers will have the plans and specifications for the new courthouse ready and will be in Jackson next Monday to present them; as soon as the court can determine the exact details for the new building, the notice to bidders will be published.

It is very probable that Cape Girardeau will have another up-to-date jewelry store in the near future; if a location on Broadway can be secured, the new company may move in early next month.
