Handbell choirs from 16 churches perform at the Missouri Handbell Festival at First Baptist Church here; it marks the first time a handbell choir festival has been held in Southeast Missouri.

BENTON, Mo. -- Michael L. Johnson was selected as the new superintendent of schools for the Kelly School District, effective July 1; Johnson is currently superintendent of the Oak Ridge School District in Cape Girardeau County.

Heavy rain fell over most of Southeast Missouri yesterday leaving a total of 3.02 inches at the Cape Girardeau Municipal Airport by 6 this morning; this is the most rain recorded in a similar period here since the weekend of May 6, 1961, when 6.20 inches were recorded.

The Cape Girardeau Central Tigers are headed for Kansas City; Central's basketball team, 22-2 for the year, will journey across the state Thursday to play Springfield Central (24-3) in the Class L State Tour; Central advanced to state by trimming visiting Perryville, Mo., last night, 55-43.

Past and present members of the Black Mass Dramatic Club of the Teachers College gather in the evening at Houck Field House to mark the club's 25th anniversary and honor Martha Shea, who is in her 33rd year as an instructor in the English Department; Shea was one of the founders of the club and has been active in it since it was organized in 1913.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- William McLane of the Teachers College in Cape Girardeau takes an early lead in the "all-around" championship of the Illinois Relay Carnival by winning the 75-yard dash, the first of the test's seven events.

Supporters are circulating a petition for J.W. Phillips for Cape Girardeau mayor; also on the ticket are Louis Brinkopf, marshal; J.H. Doris, city attorney; E.L. Drum, police judge; H.P. Gaines, assessor; E.W. Willer, collector; August Ruesskamp, treasurer; and councilmen G.S. Summers, Louis Wittmor, Henry W. Lamprich and Jack Fowler.

J.R. Adams of Pocahontas traded his automobile to George Grant for a restaurant on Main Street in Jackson; the latter will put the machine into the passenger service between Jackson and Cape Girardeau; this makes 10 autos running in this trade.
