KENNETT, Mo. -- The Daily Dunklin Democrat newspaper, which has been in business 101 years, has been purchased by Southeast Missouri publishers Sherm Smith and Gary Rust.

1964

The first reports from relatives of Cape Girardeau County residents living in earthquake-stricken Alaska are coming in; so far, there are no known casualties among them; Inez Slagle, in charge of the county chapter of the American Red Cross, says residents of the Anchorage area are being encouraged to send air-mail letters to relatives in the other 49 states as quickly as possible.

The County Court appoints Jack Waddle and H.E. Waddle, both of Delta, and William Riegert of Painton as new trustees of the county-owned Kynion Cemetery, south of Delta.

1939

Construction of the U.S. 61 parallel pavement from the Broadway terminus to Highway 74 has again been delayed, this time by a request of the government bureau of public roads that the plans be revamped; the bureau maintains that the proposed 8-foot parkway between the present pavement and the proposed road won't be wide enough.

The Missouri Utilities Co. is willing to extend at once a 6-inch water main from the present city limits to a point opposite the entrance to the new fairground park; it will then be up to the city and the WPA to distribute the water supply throughout the park; city officials will call in architect Hal Lynch to design the details.

1914

Mrs. Emeline Dunklin Hunter, mother of Mrs. L.B. Houck, Lee Hunter of St. Louis and other children, dies in the morning at the home of her daughter here; she was about 81 years old.

F.F. Braun and Brother, the hustling Haarig grocers, have found it necessary to build more room to the store; they start a gang of men working on the addition in the morning.
