Plans have been initiated for a new, championship golf course in Jackson; Hale Irwin Service Inc. has been retained by Litz Brothers Inc. to develop a design for a course, which will be located over a 400-acre-plus stretch of ground adjoining Greensferry Road on the north and Interstate 55 on the east.
About 35 supporters of an upcoming Cape Girardeau Public Schools referendum meet to map out their campaign strategy; the school board is asking voters to approve a 48-cent property tax increase.
Two boys -- ages 5 and 7 -- broke into Alma Schrader School yesterday afternoon and ravaged a kindergarten room before they were apprehended at the scene by the school's principal; the boys, both pupils at the school, smashed glass windows, overturned a piano and several book cases, flung paint, broke records, scattered books and papers, broke the aquarium and damaged the ceiling.
A sharp earthquake, more severe than any in the memory of many residents, sends shivers through Cape Girardeau and the area at 11:35 a.m.
The Cape Girardeau Board of Education is making plans to immunize pupils against diphtheria; according to records that the schools have compiled, about 900 children, whose parents are unable to pay for the immunization, will get the shots free of charge.
A proposal by the Missouri Utilities Co. to reduce commercial lighting rates approximately 11 percent in Cape Girardeau is approved by the city council; the reduction, for commercial patrons only, also will apply to all of the 32 communities in which the company operates in Southeast Missouri.
With several boats preparing to make their initial trips, Cape Girardeau will soon see the opening of the river season proper; because of the spell of inclement weather of last week, the season has been delayed; the steamer Cape Girardeau, of the Eagle Packet Co., won't enter the trade until next week.
The city council last night approved the paving of Themis Street, from Lorimier to Pacific; the street will have a 5-inch concrete base with a coating of asphaltum and finely crushed stone.
