MOUNDS, Ill. — The Meridian School Board recently voted 6-1 to dismiss longtime school district superintendent Ed Bridewell when his present contract expires this summer.

Speeding arrests have gone up and the accident rate on Southeast Missouri highways has dropped since the State Highway Patrol put four radar interceptor cars into operation late last year.

The mercury vapor lighting system will be extended from the river bridge to Sprigg Street on Morgan Oak Street and north on Sprigg Street to Broadway under instructions given yesterday by the city council; the brighter lights will be $48 more per month than the present incandescent system.

The new swimming pool at Academic Hall at State College has been completed; the pool cost about $9,000 and was built with Civil Works Administration funds; it occupies the space in the basement of the building formerly used as the men's gymnasium.

Checks for a total of $870 were issued yesterday and today to 135 men employed this week by Cape Girardeau in removing snow and ice from the streets; 4,000 truck loads of snow were piled in dumps along the Mississippi River front and elsewhere.

100 years ago: March 3, 1909

Articles of incorporation were filed late yesterday for the Rock Products Co.; the incorporators and directors of the company are J.H. Himmelberger, George McBride, Jared L. Johnson and C.J. Crawford; the company will develop deposits of limestone near Gray's Point.

Hugo E. Kay, the jeweler, now at 115 Broadway, will begin the construction of a two-story building on Broadway between Sprigg and Frederick streets during the month; he will occupy the building as a jewelry store and workshop.
