The Cape Girardeau County Court hopes to seek bids on the Allenville-Whitewater bridge project by the end of the month; consulting engineer Robert J. Hahn has been asked to develop an alternate set of construction specifications for new one-lane bridge at Allenville in the event the existing Whitewater bridge cannot be moved there.

The Scott City Board of Aldermen refuses to accept the resignation of Scott City Mayor H. Alvie Modglin, who had announced his resignation last week.

50 years ago: March 3, 1955

Real estate valuations will soar in Cape Girardeau County this year -- and taxes, perhaps, as well -- under the ultimatum laid down to county officials Wednesday by the State Tax Commission at Jackson in one of a series of conferences it is holding in the district; commission member John A. Williams told area county, city and school officials that assessed valuation on real estate in the county would be raised 45 percent on town lots and 65 percent on farm land.

Fred and George Naeter, publishers of the Southeast Missourian, will be honored at Florida Southern College's 70th Founders' Week celebration.

75 years ago: March 3, 1930

Kidnapped by three courteous bandits after they had held up and robbed his filling station at Dexter, Mo., William Pruett, 45, was released by the robber gang on Highway 25, between Delta and Dutchtown, last night, two hours after he was abducted.

A request for a county appropriation for funds to carry on home demonstration work in rural sections of Cape Girardeau County is rejected by the county court, after a number of women representing all but one township appear and ask for the aid of the court.

100 years ago: March 3, 1905

Two nice two-story brick business houses will be constructed in Haarig this spring; Meyer & Schwab, the hardware men, plan to build just east of the new bank, and Frank Steimle, the wagon maker, will build an addition to his property just east of the Good Hope Street drug store.

E.L. Walker, the proprietor of the new box factory which has been built in Mill Town, says the new plant should begin operating next week; inclement weather delayed the completion of the building.
