McCLURE, Ill. -- Resurfacing and shoulder work along 4.2-mile stretch of Grapevine Trail, which leads from McClure to Dishwood "Y," is one of number of Illinois Department of Transportation projects that were bid out last week; work will start on Route 945, about five miles southeast of McClure and continue to Dishwood "Y" about two-and-one-half miles west of Tamms, which will be site of new super-maximum prison.
Lowe's Companies Inc. officially opens its Cape Girardeau superstore; new Lowe's is 115,000-square-foot retail facility.
25 years ago: March 3, 1979
Almost as swiftly as it had come last week, massive snow accumulation in Cape Girardeau and surrounding area is all but washed away by intermittent rain and thunderstorms, as state, local and county officials prepare for new problem -- flooding.
Not only did blizzard last week put crunch on travel in Cape Girardeau, it also put bite on economic picture of city; it is estimated that economic losses in area amounted to about $8 million, based on loss of sales, loss of payroll and removal costs, repair, overtime and property damage.
50 years ago: March 3, 1954
Central High School Tigers win their opening game of state Class A basketball tournament at Houck Field House, defeating Beaumont High of St. Louis by score of 49 to 44; victory is achieved by great comeback in third and fourth quarters after Bengals had trailed at end of half.
Shooting range is being built on farm north of town by newly organized Cherokee Pioneer Junior Rifle Club, which numbers 29 teen members.

The Rev. Reinhart Lehmann, pastor of Christ Evangelical Church, speaks in evening at his church on proposed union of Evangelical Synod, the Reformed Church in the United States, and United Brethren, in which his church is included; three organizations have agreed upon method of procedure whereby they are to be united.
A.W. Zimmer, who for 15 years has been connected with M.E. Leming Lumber Co., has resigned his position and is devoting his entire time to his duties as partner in Zimmer-Clippard Real Estate and Insurance Co.; his partner is E.W. Clippard.
