Dr. Fred L. Snider, a member of the Southeast Missouri State University since 1969, has been appointed registrar at the school; he will succeed Alton Bray, who is retiring in August; Bray has been employed at the university since 1943.

The Themis Street floodgate has been closed as the Mississippi River continues to rise; the river is at 35.9 feet here and is expected to crest Monday at 37.3 feet.

50 years ago: March 29, 1959

Easter sunrise services are conducted at both the Star-Vue and Parkview drive-in theaters, sponsored as community services by the Lutheran churches of Southeast Missouri; the Rev. H.H. Koppelmann of St. Louis speaks on "Easter: Its Joys and Obligations" at the Star-Vue, while the Rev. Frederick Niedner of St. Charles preaches on "That Which Has Lived and Died Can Live Again" at the Parkview.

The Thurmers rugby football team of St. Louis, which defeated the Saracens of Toronto, Canada, yesterday at Forest Park, 15-14, had 10 present or former State College Indians football players in the lineup.

75 years ago: March 29, 1934

Unverified reports claim the Fox picture show corporation is seeking a location for a new picture house in Cape Girardeau's downtown district, preferably on Main Street; the report is that Fox will give up its lease on the three theaters owned by S.E. Brady as soon as a new picture house is built.

The choir platform at First Baptist Church is being remodeled to elevate the second and third rows of seats to make choir members sitting in those rows more visible to the audience.

100 years ago: March 29, 1909

A large temperance meeting was held yesterday at the new Methodist church in Cape Girardeau, the day being the world's Temperance Sunday; a resolution was unanimously adopted asking the legislature to pass the statewide prohibition bill.

H.R. Mason, the new manager of the water, light and gas plant, arrived in Cape Girardeau last night and begins work this morning; he represents the Light and Development Co. of St. Louis, which has contracted to manage the property here.
