25 years ago: March 29, 1982

A new four-bed pediatric intensive care unit at Pocatello, Idaho's Bannock Regional Medical Center has been dedicated in honor of the late Dr. Louis S. Williams III, son of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Williams II of Cape Girardeau; Dr. Williams, 38, died unexpectedly June 1; he was a physician at Pocatello.

The nation's economy is "sick" and the road to recovery requires cooperation between President Reagan and Congress, U.S. Sen. Thomas F. Eagleton tells a crowd of more than 200 Cape Girardeau and Jackson Rotarians at the American Legion Hall in Jackson; the Democratic senator declares, "The present standoff is an intolerable situation."

50 years ago: March 29, 1957

Formal opening of the newly established Lloyd's Business Equipment Center Inc., 625 Broadway in Cape Girardeau, will be held during April; owners are Lloyd E. Lorberg and Willard Adams.

The Rev. Nicholas J. Hirtz will be ordained to the priesthood in St. Mary's Cathedral in Cape Girardeau on Saturday morning; this will mark the first time that the rites of ordination will be performed in the Diocese of Springfield-Cape Girardeau.

75 years ago: March 29, 1932

A campaign to be designated as a "poor sick" drive, to raise money to make up a part of the deficit created by charity work at Southeast Missouri Hospital during 1931, will be inaugurated next week.

J. Robert Hoffman, 71, a native and for many years a prominent business figure at Jackson, dies at his home there; he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Adam Hoffman, both natives of Germany, who came to Jackson before the Civil War; he learned blacksmithing and wagon making from his father.

100 years ago: March 29, 1907

L.E. Kies of Jackson this week purchased the fine horse Milner from the Iron Mountain Railroad stock farm; this animal was sired by the world's greatest sire, Allerton; Milner will be a fine stable mate for Kies' other fine horse, Cuckoo.

M.J. Hatfield, a construction superintendent of the Roberts, Johnson & Rand Shoe Co., is in Cape Girardeau to begin arranging preliminaries for the start of construction work on the big factory here.
